2019 is bound to be an extraordinary year for Huawei.
By the end of 2018, Huawei was very ambitious and was determined to become the world’s largest manufacturer of shipments in 2019, but we all know later, and Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business, acknowledged, that the goal of first shipment this year has not been achieved.
Under this context, the annual flagship mobile phone Mate 30 series of Huawei arrived on schedule, which is still Huawei’s top flagship, with quite high flagship pricing: 799 Euro for Mate 30, 1099 Euro for Mate 30 Pro, and 2095 Euro for Mate 30 RS Porsche Design.
Mate 30 Pro uses a high curvature “waterfall screen” design, which brings a very high proportion of the screen, as well as a very visual impact of the front design. With the side screen design, there is no room to accommodate buttons on the side. Mate 30 Pro uses side touch to replace the previous volume and power buttons. It continues the technology of screen sound production but cancels the receiver.
The whole machine has a 6.53 inch FHD + display (2400×1176), covering the wide gamut of DCI-P3 and supporting HDR. Unfortunately, the resolution is lower than that of the previous generation of 2K.
Mate 30 uses a conventional flat screen. There are four colors for users to choose from: Star Galaxy, Jadeite, Loran Violet, Bright Black four color options, the new addition of “plain leather” material.
The new products retain larger “bang” design to support 3D structured light face recognition. Yu Chengdong explained at the launch that Chinese consumers do not like bang design at the front because they do not know how sophisticated the technology is in it.
Mate 30 Pro has a size of 158.1×73.1×8.8mm, a weight of 198g, 4500mAh battery, IP68 grade waterproof, supports 40W wired charging and 27W wireless charging, provides 8GB+128/256GB storage, and basically reaches the flagship level in terms of parameters.
Mate 30 Pro has front “waterfall screen” curved screen design, no border on both sides, cancelled the physical volume buttons, the top “bang” area is longer.
In terms of configuration, there is no need to say more about the recently released Kirin 990. In addition to performance and process iterations, its greatest advantage is the integration of 5G baseband chips, with the number of transistors exceeding 10 billion.
Under the overwhelming publicity of 5G, 5G has become an important consideration factor for users to make purchases. Huawei Mate 30 series is the only flagship machine that supports both NSA and SA networking. In terms of communication indicators, it can guarantee that it will not lag behind in the next 1-2 years.
In addition to 5G, other radio frequencies of Mate 30 are equally robust. 14 of the 21 antennas support 5G, eight 5G bands and dual VLOTE calls.
It can be said that radio frequency performance is Huawei Mate 30’s biggest advantage over competitors, Yu Chengdong also teased Apple, “Some mobile phones do not even support 5G.”
But the absence of Wi-Fi 6 is a big pity. Wi-Fi 6 and 5G are the two current communication standards going hand in hand. Although the next-door iPhone does not have 5G, it already supports Wi-Fi 6, which can bring stronger near-field communication performance.
This time, Mate 30Pro used 40 million movies + 40 million super-sensitization + 8 million long focus + 3-D depth-of-field lens Leica four-shot, two 40 million lenses arranged with RGBB and RYB pixels. The main camera sensor size reached 1/154 inches.
Yu Chengdong said that Mate 30 Pro receives 137% more light than competitors, and “shooting brightly” has always been Huawei’s goal of image pursuit. The sample photos used at the press conference, which were taken with other mobile phones, show nothing but total darkness. But Huawei could take usable pictures with details. In addition, the Mate 30 series does not carry the periscope lens of the P30 series, but with three-fold optical zoom and five-fold hybrid nondestructive zoom.
The year of 2019 is bound to be difficult for Huawei. The most direct impact is that Google has stopped authorizing Huawei’s new phones. Mate 30 series will not be GMS certified and cannot use Google maps, Gmail, YouTube and other Google functions. The impact on the overseas market is magnitude.
According to the Dutch media LetsGoDigtal, Huawei Mate 30 series may not be listed in Europe. Apparently, Huawei evaluates the impact of its inability to use Google services and believes that it will have a tremendous impact on the performance of the European market, so it opts to withdraw. However, the venue of the conference still chose Munich to hold the press conference.
At the conference, Yu introduced Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), which provided remedial solutions to some extent when GMS was not available, but the Kit still needed application support, which will take some time.
