Yesterday we talked about why some best reviewed shows are cancelled by streaming medium, but that does not mean we do not have anything to expect with what are on the air now. Let’s catch a glimpse of what we can anticipate for next week on TV screen.
The focus of this week is definitely the Primetime Emmy Awards. On Sunday, September, 22nd, almost all excellent TV stars, producers, behind-the-scene personnel and celebrities from other fields will gather together for the feast especially designed for TV shows industry. The ceremony will be aired by Fox at 8 pm.
The Voice Season 17 will have its premiere Night 1 of 2 at 8 pm on Monday, September, 23th. Night 2 of 2 follows at 8 pm on Thursday, September, 25th. Adam Levine has been on the spinning chair for 8 years and he announced the leaving this fall through Instagram. Fans need time to get over the sad news, but it is believed that they will soon cheer up by new judges Gwen Stefani. The other three judges include former American idol winner and two consecutive championship winner Kelly Clarkson, Gwen’s boyfriend Blake Shelton, which means a music competition will happen between this loving couple, and Grammy winner John Legend.
Tuesday is a big day. In addition to The Voice, This Is Us Season 4 (NBC) will premiere at 9 pm, too. The Pearson family charms the audience and NBC also announced in May that the show is renewed through 6 seasons. Although the creator Dan Fogelman gave a hint before that season 6 will be the finale. NBC, according to Hollywood Reporter, is optimistic that this show could still continue after 2021 – 2022 television season.
It is not a surprise that NBC expects a lot about this show. According to Variety, Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, presidents of scripted programming at NBC Entertainment, wrote in a statement that “In a television landscape with nearly 500 original scripted series, there are very few, if any, that have the critical and cultural impact of This Is Us and we couldn’t be more proud to bring fans three more seasons of a show that so well represents the NBC brand. A huge thank you and congratulations to our executive producers, cast, and crew who reach new heights every week with the show’s inventive and compelling storytelling.”
The trailer reveals that there are some new faces in upcoming season. Moore, who plays Rebecca, commented before that “It’s so strange, isn’t it? How just like that a complete stranger can become a big part of your story. It’s actually kind of terrifying, you know? How a single cross with one person you’ve never met can change everything.” It really provokes the audience’s interest about what those new face will bring to the new season. It might be a little tougher to choose between This is Us and Empire. The latter one has its final season premiere at the same time with the former one.
The Neighborhood Season 2 (CBS) returns on the same day. The show is about how a white couple fits in an African-American community and becomes friends with their neighbor. The show aims to explore the ubiquitous social and racial issues in America nowadays. The producer commented before that “when I started to get involved, I thought the main thing that was missing was the actual point of view of the black guy. [Jim] had a point of view moving into a black neighborhood, but didn’t have the point of view of the other side… if you get that point of view, you get more into the human side, the relationship side, and what it takes to live in harmony with someone next door to you—white, black, or otherwise.”
Another comedy that will hit the screen is Modern Family Season 11 (ABC), kicking off its finale this year. The premiere of this season is on Wednesday, September 25th at 9 pm. Modern Family features life diversity by a big family. Columbian woman Gloria gets married to old, rich and kind American man Jay. Clair, Jay’s daughter, and Phil make up a typical American middle-class family with three children Haley, Alex and Luke. Jay’s son Michell is a gay, adopting a Vietnam baby with his husband Cam. The show represents how parents try to communicate with children, how couples get along with each other based on understanding, and how young generation explores the way suitable for themselves to be an adult. No matter what happiness and bothering each character has in the show, family is the source of power for them by providing love and support.
South Park Season 23 has its premiere (Comedy Central) on the same day at 10 pm. The animation always tells stories in a ridiculous way, but it can trigger the audience to think seriously about social problems.
How to Get Away With Murder（ABC）will end up with 6 season this year. The finale premiere is on Thursday, September, 26th at 10 pm. The audience could also choose to watch Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 21 premiere (NBC) at the same time. American Housewife is back on Friday. And for Saturday, no surprise, Saturday Night Live (NBC) is on the top of the list.
